Most Dutch people believe the Roman Catholic Church authorities deliberately covering up cases of sexual harassment, it was revealed in a poll that found on Sunday yesterday (12/12), which revealed the damage to reputation of the Catholic Church in the Netherlands.

An independent commission said Thursday that as many as 1975 people have expressed themselves have become victims of sexual and physical abuse, when they were under the care of the Church since 1945, and the Dutch Catholic church was ranked second worst behind Ireland in the scandal that has rocked The Church in Europe and the United States.

Maurice de Hond poll showed that 82 percent of respondents believe most church authorities knew about the problem, while 81 percent believe the Pope also knows this.

About 78 percent said they were "very disappointed" by the violations committed by the church.

De Hond says the position of Pope Benedict and the Catholic Church authorities have been "deeply affected" by the scandal.

The poll also found that 69 percent of respondents think that the Church should no longer make comments about how people should behave, but this percentage fell to 55 percent among Catholics.
Victims of sexual violence in the Dutch parliament want a full investigation into the scandal and polls show 56 percent of Dutch citizens support the investigation.

Although the scandal has forced Pope Benedict to apologize to victims of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests, the survey found that 88 percent, or 75 percent among Catholics, believe that the pope needs to be clearer in conveying the apologies.
