One in four people around the world reported paying a bribe during the past year, according to a study released on Thursday to mark International Anti-Corruption Day.
This research was conducted by Transparency International, a non-governmental organization based in Berlin, and focuses on small-scale bribery. The poll involved 91,000 people in 86 countries and territories.
According to the Global Corruption Barometer 2010, in the last 12 months, one in four people reported paying a bribe to one of nine institutions, such as health, education or tax authorities. The police proved to be the most corrupt, according to them (29 percent) who have a relationship with the police always have to pay a bribe to the guard.
Around the world, sub-Saharan Africa is the region's largest bribery by one of two people commit bribery to officials in the past 12 months.
Middle East and North Africa is the most corrupt region next with 36 percent. 32 percent on the Soviets, 23 percent in South America, 19 percent in the Balkans and Turkey, 11 percent in the Asia-Pacific, and five percent in the EU and North America.
While countries in the top list for the payment of bribes are Afghanistan, Cambodia, Cameroon, India, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Palestine, Senegal, Sierre Leone and Uganda.
