China says dialogue and cooperation is the only way to relieve tension on the Korean peninsula.
 
A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Jiang Yu, said the responsibility for maintaining peace in the region should be borne by all parties in the region. China, North Korea's closest ally, urged the United States and other countries to persuade North Korea to stop provocations.
 

This request was issued two weeks after North Korea attacked South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island, which killed four people. Pyongyang said the artillery attack was an act of retaliation for South Korea to hold military exercise. Since the Korean War ended in 1953, the first time that North Korea carried out attacks on civilians.

Still tense
The situation on the Korean Peninsula itself is still hot with a South Korean naval war exercises near the disputed waters between the two countries which entered the second day.


N Korea considers this military exercise as a provocative action.


The new South Korean defense minister said it would deploy air attack if North Korea returned to attack civilian targets. In a related development, U.S. military commander Admiral Mike Mullen's visit to Seoul today to show solidarity with the South.


Mullen will hold talks with army chief and defense minister of South Korea.


South Korea's armed forces said in a written statement, the two sides will discuss North Korea's provocation and the steps that can be taken in future to prevent further acts of provocation.
